Daily SPF protection: The essential step to include in your daily routine
The sun is essential to our vitality: a natural source of vitamin D, it contributes to the health of our bones and the proper functioning of our immune system. However, its rays are not without danger for the skin: responsible for accelerating skin ageing, they also increase the risk of developing skin cancers. It is therefore essential to PROTECT yourself from the sun and its rays on a daily basis, to preserve the health of your skin.
UV rays, the invisible threat
Ultraviolet (UV) rays emitted by the sun are an invisible threat to the skin, on which they have harmful effects. There are two types of rays: UVA and UVB.
A as in "Age"
UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin, stimulating the production of radicals that cause long-term damage such as :
- Skin aging: loss of elasticity and sagging, leading to the appearance of wrinkles.
- Sun intolerance, characterized by redness, blotchiness and itching
- Hyperpigmentation and pigmentation disorders: pregnancy mask, brown spots, gray complexion
- Development of skin cancers
UVA rays are present all year round, even on cloudy days. They account for 95% of all UV radiation. This does not make them any less dangerous. They penetrate the skin very deeply, right down to the cells of the dermis.
B for "burn"
UVB rays account for 5% of all UV. Unlike UVA rays, they can be very painful, causing sunburns, allergic reactions and skin cancers.
In a nutshell:
Unprotected daily exposure causes cumulative damage, jeopardizing the health of your skin, from premature aging to the development of skin cancers. The best defense against UV rays is the daily application of SPF protection.
Daily SPF protection: the best defense
Applying SPF protection every day is the first line of defense against UV rays. It helps prevent skin damage, reduces the risk of skin cancer, and keeps your skin looking young by minimizing premature aging. The daily application of UV protection is not only a preventive measure; it also helps maintain your skin's long-term health and beauty. By minimizing sun damage, you're investing in the youth and vitality of your skin.
Should I reapply my SPF protection during the day?
Yes: it's important to reapply regularly. Every two hours in the case of prolonged direct exposure, or 1-2 times a day if exposure is limited.
SPF what?
SPF (Sunburn Protection Factor) or IP (Indice de Protection), represents the level of protection provided by a suncare product. The higher the SPF, the greater its photoprotective action. An SPF 30 will block around 95% of UVB rays, while an SPF 50 will block 98% of UVB rays. Even if the difference seems minimal, we recommend applying SPF 50 sun protection, which is still more effective.
PA rating
UVA Protection is the measure of protection against UVA rays. Commonly used in Japan and South Korea, it classifies protection levels into four categories: PA+, PA++, PA+++, and PA++++, the latter offering the highest level of protection.
Sun protection products rated PA++++ provide the most robust protection against UVA rays. Tests have shown that they provide protection equivalent to SPF 50+ and filter out around 98% of UVA rays. These products are recommended for individuals with very sun-sensitive skin, prolonged sun exposure, or a family history of skin cancer.
Typically formulated with ingredients such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which act as physical barriers against UV rays, these sunscreens offer a preferable alternative to chemical filters, which can irritate the skin and trigger allergic reactions.
When to apply SPF protection?
As you can see, the daily application of SPF protection is not just a summer habit, but an essential skincare ritual all year round. Apply your SPF care every day, even in winter and on overcast days, and don't hesitate to repeat the application every two hours, in case of direct and prolonged exposure.
